For Black History Month, we sat down with Why Hate Math (WHM), a Brooklyn-based, Black woman-owned math education company, to talk about the importance of Black children seeing themselves in STEM. WHM is dedicated to empowering students with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive academically and pursue opportunities in STEM innovation, careers, and leadership. Through math tutoring for K-12 students and adult learners, as well as consulting services for schools and districts, WHM works to close educational gaps and build stronger math communities. In this conversation, we discuss why representation in STEM matters, how early support changes outcomes for Black students, and what families and schools can do to better prepare the next generation of innovators and leaders. This interview highlights how math education can be a tool for equity, confidence, and long-term success.

R. Kelly has been placed in solitary confinement at the federal correctional institution in Butner, N.C., a development that could complicate his ongoing effort to secure a new trial. The reason for the disciplinary action has not been publicly disclosed, according to reporting from AllHipHop. The placement comes at a sensitive moment, as Kelly continues to challenge his convictions through the courts. Federal prison officials have not commented on the specifics of the situation. Solitary confinement—often referred to as the Special Housing Unit, or SHU—involves extended isolation from the general prison population. Inmates typically spend about 23 hours a day in their cells, with limited access to phone calls, visits, and other resources. Legal access can be more restricted under such conditions, depending on institutional rules. For someone pursuing an appeal, that environment can make coordination more difficult. Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, was reportedly informed of the confinement shortly before arriving for a scheduled visit. He had planned to review documents related to Kelly’s motion for a retrial. Although the two were able to meet, Brindley was not able to discuss certain aspects of the case in detail because of the restrictions in place. How long Kelly will remain in solitary has not been announced. New Trial Bid in Ongoing Appeal Kelly is seeking a new trial in his Chicago case, where he was convicted on charges including child pornography and enticement and sentenced to 20 years. That sentence runs concurrently with a 30-year term handed down in New York following convictions for racketeering and sex trafficking. In recent filings, he has alleged prosecutorial misconduct and claimed that officials within the Bureau of Prisons conspired against him while he was incarcerated. Authorities have not publicly addressed those claims. It remains uncertain whether the confinement will affect the timing or substance of his appeal. Federal records previously indicated a projected release date of Dec. 21, 2045. For now, Kelly remains at FCI Butner as his legal challenges continue to move through the courts.

Many of the photos featured major political figures such as Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, as well as prominent entertainers like Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson. Epstein began his professional career in the early 70s teaching physics and mathematics at the Dalton School. He then moved into the banking and finance sector, starting at Bear Stearns. Not long after, he started his own firm, the Intercontinental Assets Group Inc. (IAG). Epstein would go on to be a consultant for several major firms and launch media outlets like Radar Online.

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment in a Dedham, Massachusetts courtroom on Friday (Feb.13). DJ and media personality Abby De La Rosa is opening up about life within her uniquely structured family with Nick Cannon. A Tennessee state court has delayed a plea hearing for Cornelius Smith, the admitted gunman in the 2021 killing of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, as counsel for both sides finalize the terms of a negotiated agreement. Smith, 36, was expected to enter a guilty plea Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of the “100 Shots” hitmaker, born Adolph Thornton Jr. Instead, the court reset the matter to March 30 at the request of attorneys who said they needed additional time to “iron out the details” of the deal before presenting it to the judge. Smith previously testified under oath during the trial of co-defendant Justin Johnson. On the stand, he admitted that he and Johnson carried out what he described as a paid hit. Smith told jurors the order originated with Big Jook, the late brother of Memphis rapper Yo Gotti. Big Jook was later killed in a separate shooting. Young Dolph’s Shooter Corneilius Smith Accepts Plea Deal Young Dolph was gunned down on Nov. 17, 2021, at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis, a storefront he frequently visited. The killing prompted widespread public reaction and intensified scrutiny of violence within the local music scene. Johnson was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and related offenses. Prosecutors argued the shooting was premeditated and financially motivated. A jury found him guilty on all counts, and he received a life sentence in state prison. Another defendant, Hernandez Govan, was accused of orchestrating the murder by connecting the shooters to the alleged plot. However, a jury acquitted Govan last summer, marking a significant shift in the prosecution’s case. Smith is the last remaining defendant whose legal exposure has not been resolved. His anticipated plea could conclude one of Memphis’ most closely watched criminal proceedings in recent years.
